Called erroneously “Castle” due to its shape which resembles a royal manor, the Castle of Donnafugata is a sumptuous aristocratic residence built in the late ‘ 800. The building covers an area of 2500 square meters, built in neo-Gothic style, with large mullioned Windows that adorn the entire façade and with two round side towers. The castle was recently acquired by the city of Ragusa, which after careful restoration and preservation of all furniture and furnishings still present within many rooms, has returned it to the tourist as a cultural, architectural and historian asset. Around the Castle, you can also visit the fabulous garden, rich of botanical species, and of trees of Ficus: a legend tells that at the time of the Baron of Donnafugata, the large leaves of this tree could be sent as postcards.

The eastern coast, that goes from Pozzallo to Ispica is Rocky, with high cliffs, overlooking the sea. This makes the waters of the sea front, clear and limpid and therefore suitable for diving. The rest of the coast, apart from some brief, is characterized by sandy beaches, sometimes immersed in the Mediterranean Scrub, rich in endemic species, both flora and fauna. Many beaches have free access. In maritime towns instead, many beaches are equipped to offer hospitality, entertainment and sport activities on the sea.

Maybe the most beautiful baroque town in Sicily: so at least several poets, artists and art critics have defined this town. Built on the confluence of three valleys, Scicli shows the best of itself , in the evening, when feeble lanterns, gently illuminate its alleys made of stone, while the Baroque masks under the balconies of palaces, seem to mock the tourist. Precisely because of its undisputed charm, this beautiful town has become in recent years a real movie set, ideal location for films, tv series and cinema. The Town Hall, became the Headquarters of Vigata, in the tv series, published by RAI, “Inspector Montalbano”. The “cinema- tourism” attracts thousands of visitors every year: and for this, even Scicli made his wealth.

The smallest town of the province of Ragusa. Built on a gentle slope, after the disastrous earthquake of 1693, Giarratana lives of farming and traditions. Fields of wheat, olives and oregano, cover the whole territory. But the main product of this country is an extraordinary onion: maybe the thickest that exists (with specimens weighing nearly 2 kg) has a unique sweetness and an unmistakable taste. In August every year, the town celebrates the goodness of this production with a Festival, now famous throughout Italy. Then at Christmas, the historic streets of Giarratana are filled with history and memory: the reconstruction of the old rural traditions and crafts are revived in a Nativity, animated by the citizens themselves in the oldest houses of the old town.
